Looks like Instagram influencers are losing their influence

Looks like Instagram influencers are losing their influenceLooks like Instagram influencers are losing their influenceA couple of years ago, two very funny friends of mine, Matt Leary and Ian Hunt, got some attention after winning a string of contests for their mini-series called Insta Boyz. The premise survived on disemboweling the glib teen to early twenties cheese turds that procure a lucrative living posting candid typically shirtless shots of them in a Chipotle bathroom with a caption like Live hard, Play hardest, RIP Doris Roberts.Because my friend group, in particular, gets a lot of mileage out of bitter cynicism, watching new installments of Insta Boyz quickly evolved into a ritual, until one day Hunt and Leary abruptly stopped making them. It only occurred to me to ask what happened about a week ago. Besides moving on to other equally funny things, the guys they were parodying gradually faded into extinction. Satirizing social media-influencers becomes a lot harder when one of the real ones posts a video of himself dabbing on a cadaver for the gram. The next dumb thing is almost certainly around the corner, but for now, it seems like people are catching an unpleasant whiff of the current one.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraA recent research study conducted by Mobile Marketer reports that engagement rates on sponsored posts have dropped from 4% back in early 2016 to 2.4% in 2019. The cream of the crop, Travel Influencers, have been experiencing a sharp median decline of engagement rates to the tune of 3.5% a year. For whatever reason, influencers with the highest number of followers are suffering the highest instances of engagement loss. Eugnie Grey, who is an LA and New York City-based influencer, had this to say to Refinery 29 in response to the purported decline in influencer influence. Its hard. During my really busy times, I can sometimes be p osting three, four, five sponsored posts in a row, Grey explainedThe key is to keep it real whenever possible, both publicly and to your followers in private. I enjoy talking to my followers over DM whenever I can they know Im a real, normal person just trying to pay the billsTo be clear, people arent using the app itself any less. As of 2019, Instagram houses more than one billion users. The vapid sovereign is simply losing grip of its impact, thanks to a combination of wild missteps on behalf its most popular stars, and a concerted effort on behalf of its developers to change the impression that their app is little more than an insipid cauldron of vanity and beer snobs. The study found a notable decline in influence across all industries, including beauty, fashion, food, and lifestyle over the past year. The curmudgeon in me would love to believe that this is due to a growing antipathy for all this stuff, but the studys authors propose a much more plausible explanation. They wager users are simply sick of being staffed by sponsored posts and advertisements which sees them scroll past them. So if influencers can find it in their hearts to post pictures of their asparagus and pecks for free, they might have a shot at winning their audience back.

Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out

Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out Resume Accomplishments A Resume Writers Take on Standing Out As a resume writer, I don’t think it’s possible to overstate the importance of resume accomplishments throughout your job search. Accomplishments are the most potent element to set yourself apart in writing. Its that simple. And theyre also very useful during job interviews. Most resumes are filled with roles and responsibilities, and that makes them incredibly average. What makes accomplishments better is that they spell out the value for employers. The focus isnt on what you did. Its what they got out of it that really matters.  More money, less headaches, new ideas, smoother processes, more efficient teams… (This is at the root of what I call the 3 laws of resume writing.) Accomplishments (also called achievements or results) are powerful because they speak your readers language.  While I dont believe that theyre the only thing that matters, I think theyre what matters most.  Especially considering the fact that its the weakest point on many resumes! Some examples of accomplishments Here’s some material I found on real resumes. Notice the contrast between accomplishments and roles/responsibilities. Nurse resume accomplishments: Member of Hospital Improvement team, with a key role in improving patient flow. Deep understanding of addiction and dedicated to treating it like another disease. My patients trust me and share important information that helps me attend to their medical needs. Demonstrated and explained hospital infection control protocol to many groups of clinical staff. Nurse roles and responsibilities: Counted all narcotics/controlled substances at the beginning and end of each shift. Assisted with surgery and monitored patients in recovery. Participated in interdepartmental and multidisciplinary communications and collaboration. Provided information, emotional support and reassurance to patients and relatives. Programmer resume accomplishments: Improved performance of a web crawler in Java. Took the initiative of porting [redacted] to 64-bit Linux (30k lines of C++ functions called from Java to mostly parse and craft network packets), which turned out to be a great foresight as, a year later, [redacted] urgently needed to migrate appliance customers away from 32-bit. Served in Technical Lead role for teams up to 4 people. Programmer roles and responsibilities: Performed interviews and generated requirements analysis documentation. Maintained proprietary server software used for collection and broadcast of various compression and encryption of over-the-air messages. Developed year long project plan for analysis, rollout, and resource allocation. Do you see how the accomplishments  could really catch the eye of hiring managers?  Value, from their perspective, means reducing expenses, improving a process, managing people, taking initiative, and so on.  This is what resonates and makes you stand out. And this is how you could get you an interview. On the other hand, roles and responsibilities are expected from people in this position. Of course you do that. Its your job! They rarely have enough weight to make you distinctive. So, are you ready to fill your resume with accomplishments? Maximizing accomplishments on your resume Roles, responsibilities and accomplishments are the building blocks of your Experience section. And since resumes are scanned very quickly (at first), you should present most of the information in bullet form. According to your situation, you might want to adapt how you present your career history.   To find accomplishments on your own, a list of relevant questions can be quite helpful. You’ll find one in this accomplishments worksheet. The questions look for special things you did, how you impressed your boss, your contributions to profitability, and so on. But note that they’re generic, therefore many questions might not apply to you. If you’re looking for tailored material, I’ve worked on lists of accomplishments, by profession. Actually, the accomplishment examples I provided above come from two of my books in the Resume Hacking series. I have a book for nurses and another for occupational therapists. A book for programmers and one for system administrators. Basically, each book contains a unique, customized list of 50+ accomplishments like the ones above, just for your field. The goal is to jog your memory and help you craft bullets that carry extra weight. Many of your peers don’t have accomplishments-driven resumes… There are just too many resumes out there with almost no accomplishments. Its pathetic. As a resume writer, I see this over and over again (and helplessly roll my eyes). But for you, it’s an opportunity to stand out. If you put in the time and effort to find and write down all your accomplishments, you’ll add strong, distinctive character to your resume. Couple that with good keyword-tailoring, to handle ATS scans, and your resume will get much more attention. If you know other job seekers who are struggling to stand out, let them know about what you’ve just discovered by sharing this piece! Condoleezza Rice Dont let anyone else define your passion

Condoleezza Rice 'Don't let anyone else define your passion' Condoleezza Rice 'Don't let anyone else define your passion' It’s graduation season, and we here at Ladders have decided to take a look back and showcase some past commencement addresses that stand the test of time. Below is the full transcript of Condoleezza Rice’s commencement address to High Point University’s Class of 2016:Education is transformative. It literally changes lives. That is why people for centuries have worked so hard to become educated. Education, more than any other force, can help to erase arbitrary divisions of race and class, arbitrary divisions of culture, and to unlock every person’s God-given potential.Your passion may be hard to spot. So keep an open mind and keep searching. And when you find your passion, it’s yours. Not what someone else thinks it should be. There’s no earthly reason that a black girl from Birmingham, Alabama, should be a Soviet specialist. But that’s what I wanted to be. Don’t let anyone else define your passion for you because of your gender or the color of your skin.Too often cyni cism can be the fellow traveler of learning. And I know why. History is full of much cruelty and suffering and darkness. And it can be hard sometimes to believe that there’s a brighter future. But for all of our failings as human beings, for all of our current problems, more people today enjoy lives of opportunity than in all of human history. This progress has been the concerted effort not of cynics but of visionaries and optimists and idealists who deal with the world as it is but who never stop working for the world as it should be. Here in America, our own ideals of freedom and equality have been borne through generations by optimists. There was a day in my own lifetime when the hope of liberty and justice for all seemed impossible. But because individuals kept faith with the ideal of equality, we see a different America today where “we the people” is more inclusive. It’s  commencement season! Follow Ladders’  Commencement Addresses magazine on Flipboard  to watch and read all of the most inspiring speeches from this year and years past. It is your responsibility as educated people to help close the gaps of justice and opportunity- and yes, the gaps of freedom that still exist beyond our shores as well as within them. At High Point, I know the mission of service is very close to the heart of this university, a recognized model for service learning. The ideal of service to others has inspired this class as well as others to devote thousands of hours of your own time to help those in need. And yes, your service will help them. But take it from me, it will help you more. When you encounter those who are less fortunate, you cannot possibly give way to grievance. “Why do I not have?” Or its twin brother, entitlement. “Why don’t they give me?” Instead, you will ask, “Why have I been given so much?” And from that spirit, you will join the legions of optimists who are working toward a better human future. Be passionate about what you choose to do in life. Use your powers of reason. Cultivate humility. Remain optimistic and always try to serve others as well as the goals of freedom and peace and justice.

How to Conduct Stay Interviews

How to Conduct Stay Interviews How to Conduct Stay Interviews Will your best and brightest employees stick around? research shows that 42 percent of workers, and a whopping 68 percent of millennials, say they plan to look for a new job in the next 12 months. Replacing an employee costs between half and five times that person’s salary, according to Gallup. Considering how much time and money it costs to hire a new employee, most managers understandably would prefer that their people stick around for the long haul. Here’s a potential remedy: stay interviews. What are stay interviews? Think of them as reverse performance reviews that you conduct with existing employees. Stay interviews are less about the organization evaluating the employee and more about the employee evaluating the organization. A stay interview could take as little as 15 minutes or could be a longer conversation. The first employees to invite are your top performers, the ones who you’d be heartbroken to lose. Depending on the amount of time you have, you might eventually want to interview all the employees on your team. How to conduct a stay interview Whereas the job interview is conducted pre-employment and the exit interview post-employment (when it’s too late for you to act on what you learn), the stay interview falls right in the middle. It’s at a critical juncture where you need to do all you can to convince workers who have proved valuable to stay with your firm. Conduct stay interviews one-on-one. Companywide satisfaction surveys have their use, but they won’t give you the detailed insight you need about a star performer. For that, you must ask deep questions and elicit honest answers. From the worker’s perspective, a company that takes the time to do individual stay interviews shows that its leaders are truly open to feedback and want to hear concerns from their employees. Make it clear to your employees that you value their feedback and hope that they will be honest about their opinions of the job and the company. Many professionals want to be heard, so chances are good that they’ll open up. HIRING? WE CAN HELP! Questions to ask in a stay interview What keeps you working here? What do you enjoy about your job? What do you like least? Can you describe a recent good day at work? How would you rate your happiness here on a scale of 1 to 10? What would it take to get you to a 10? What would cause you to leave the company? What would you like to change about your job, team or department? What about the company culture would you change? What do you think about on your way to work? Have you ever thought about leaving? What made you consider it, and what made you stay? What motivates you at work? What demotivates you? How do you prefer we show appreciation to you? Where do you see yourself in five years? Is there anything else you want to bring up? You might find many more specific questions to ask in a stay interview. The idea is to identify problems before they become deal-breakers that send your staff on the job hunt. If you feel defensive about criticism your organization is receiving, don’t bite back and instead consider the employee’s points. Focus on learning what you’re doing well and how you can strengthen those areas, and where the company might be falling down on the job. Put your money where your mouth is The next step is to act on any pressing issues. If people find management isn’t actually making any changes after the discussions, they’ll simply look on the interviews as window dressing rather than a sincere effort. Be transparent about what you can or can’t do to remedy a situation, being careful not to overpromise and underdeliver. After you start conducting stay interviews, keep track of employee turnover. With any luck, you will be able to boost your retention rates and keep your star performers, while developing more loyalty with all your employees. Stay interviews can give your employees another reason to stay.

Ultimate Guide to Earn More Money as a Project Manager

Ultimate Guide to Earn More Money as a Project Manager Ultimate Guide to Earn More Money as a Project Manager In project management, your salary depends on a lot of things. Factors like location, experience and the size of the  project come into play for calculating average salaries for project managers. You may be responsible for managing a large project team who are directly working for you. Or your team responsibilities might be smaller, with only a handful of people reporting to you for project work but otherwise having direct line management into someone else (this is called a matrix structure). So, given all the variables, how can you get paid more as a project manager? Follow these tips to increase your chances of having a successful conversation with your manager about improving your pay. It’s packed with tips to help you get the project management salary you deserve. Ask for More Money It might seem obvious, but no one is going to give you more money unless you ask for it. Where companies do have an annual inflationary pay rise, this is not equal to being paid more for the work you do. All that does is ensure that you aren’t paid less in real, comparative terms, given that the cost of living goes up every year. However, if you go to your manager and ask for a pay rise today, you probably won’t get very far. You need to plan for this kind of conversation. Prepare yourself by doing some research, knowing what you are worth and planning. Ultimately, you are trying to make it impossible for your manager to say no to your request for a salary increase! Here are some tips on what to look for and how to make that conversation flow easily. Know the Market First, know the kind of salaries that are being paid to people in comparative jobs in your field. The average salary of project managers differs from industry to industry and city to city. Even cities within the same country can have vastly different salary ranges. Check out surveys like the latest project management salary survey from PMI to give you an idea of what other project professionals in your area earn. It gives you a benchmark. It may still not be completely aligned and relevant to your situation, but it gives you data to help you work out where your skills and experience should put you in the salary range. Check the Job Ads Another way to find out what project managers who do what you do earn, is to check the recruitment ads. You’ll see what other companies are prepared to pay people doing similar roles to you. It can help you establish how much you are worth to others, and by extension, to your management team. Remember, it is far cheaper for them to give you an increase than it is for them to hire someone else. Having data that backs up your claim to deserving more makes it an easy conversation for you both. Know Your Company Before coming out and directly asking for a boost to your pay, find time to talk to your boss about the project management pay scale. Is there one? What do they expect you to be able to demonstrate before you move up to the next salary band? Knowing what is expected of you can make the conversation about pay increases easier because you can be prepared to demonstrate how you meet each of the criteria. If you don’t currently meet the criteria to move to the next level of pay, you can still have the conversation but be prepared to be knocked back unless you can demonstrate something else exceptional that trumps the formal pay scale. It’s a lot easier to get a pay rise as a project manager in companies that do have a formal pay structure because you can see what is required. Then you can engineer your experience to give you that. Build Your Experience A key way to prove that you deserve a higher salary as a project manager is to show that you have earned it. It comes through being able to demonstrate that you have experience in the relevant areas. Look critically at what you have achieved in your career so far and the kind of projects that you have run. Compare this to any project management career path information or salary scale from your employer, if there is one. You can also use job adverts to show you the kind of skills that you require to get the pay increase that you are looking for. Find the recruitment ads in the salary bracket you are hoping to earn and see what skills they require. Then see if you measure up. Have you worked with project sponsors who sit in the executive suite? Do you have experience  creating and managing project budgets? If not, you can put development plans together, with your manager or mentor, to help you achieve the level of experience required to boost your experience and create a watertight case for a pay rise. Get Certified The average salary for PMP ® certified project managers is generally higher than for project managers who don’t hold the qualification (according to PMI research). The difference in some cases can be significant, and it gets more significant the longer you hold the qualification. In other words, getting certified while you are relatively new to being a project manager will pay back over the longer term. PMP ® certification might not be right for you, but there are a number of other project management credential schemes available. It is where your market research comes in handy again. Check the job adverts and find out what qualifications are most requested by hiring managers. Some of the other commonly requested project management certifications include: APMPPRINCE2CAPM ® (Think of this one as the younger sibling to PMP ®) If there is a particular qualification that your management team prefers, see if you can sign up for that one. Change Companies Sometimes your best option is to take a position elsewhere. You might be ready to do that now, or you might want to explore salary opportunities with your current employer before making the decision. Moving to a new company is a major change in your career. If you are going to do it, seek out the highest paying project management jobs in your industry and apply for those. It’s no secret that the biggest pay rises come from moving companies. Companies who are hiring tend to have budgets in mind, and they know they need to attract the best talent. Good salary packages (combined with other staff benefits) are one way to do that. However, it’s good practice not to make salary the first conversation you have with your interviewer. It doesn’t start the relationship well to have your potential new boss think that you are only in it for the cash. Let the conversation and interview process flow naturally to its conclusion. Then you can move to negotiate your salary. It is where a recruitment company could be a big asset to your job search as they can do some of that negotiation on your behalf. They’ll be able to guide you to jobs in the appropriate salary bracket for your aspirations and experience. Think Beyond Salary Salary is only one part of your overall compensation as a project manager. There are other factors that add up to your total benefits package. These include: Vacation time and other paid time offPension contributionsHealth insuranceHelp with childcare costsPaying for certification or other career development opportunities such as attendance at conferences or other training eventsSeason ticket loans or other help with transportation, parking, and commuting costsSubsidized food, such as a discounted (or free) staff restaurant. All of these can be negotiated with your current or future employer and have a monetary value that goes beyond what you see in your bank account every month. And, of course, work-life balance plays a big part in your overall well-being and happiness at work. Making the shift from a company that requires you in the office at 8 am every day which is a 40-minute commute away in rush hour traffic is a very different proposition to one that allows you to work flexibly and sometimes from home. You may decide, on balance, that the extra pay increase from moving companies isn’t worth the hassle of the change in lifestyle, so take everything into consideration before you sign that acceptance letter. Be Excellent None of this is going to matter if you can’t demonstrate that you have the project management skills commensurate with a higher salary. You have to be able to prove that you are worth the extra money. It’s not enough to know how to write a business case for your project. You have to write one, and it has to be excellent. Every project manager knows how to manage project risk. How have you done it and resolved a major problem for the company, or headed off a potential crisis? Perhaps you have mentored other, more junior project managers, or led a team successfully and won an internal award for your project? Managers want their staff to be fantastic and are (normally) very happy to reward star performers. Your challenge is to show that you are a star project manager and that you deserve the extra money. Be Realistic Finally, apply a bit of common sense to what you are asking for. Your current manager is unlikely to approve a 50% pay rise. Be realistic and fair, and you have more chance of being treated similarly. Implement Your Plan Done your research? Updated your resumé to showcase your experience and skills? Perfect. You’re ready to have a conversation with your manager about increasing your pay. Book a time in their diary and let them know what it is about so that they can be prepared too. Employers expect their staff to talk about money, so don’t be afraid to bring it up. It might not go the way you were expecting but you will get useful feedback either way, and it opens the door for further discussions later. Good luck!

Reboot Your Resume This New Year

Reboot Your Resume This New Year Reboot Your Resume This New Year Reboot Your Resume This New Year Applying for a job? Well, writing a resume is the first step to begin your job search. It is like your first date with the employer that can pique the interest of the recruiter. But wait! Do you know you have only 6 seconds to impress the employer? So, how can you do that? “Change is the only constant thing.” Like every other thing, your CV also needs a change to keep abreast of what an employer is looking for in the ‘New Year’. Therefore, if you still stick to your obsolete style of CV writing, you are far behind the competition in today’s job market. To make your CV stand out in the pile of thousands of resumes an employer receives for a single job opening, here are the strategies to reboot your CV for the best results. courtesy of N. Van unsplash.com Give it a Relevant Start It’s true that “First Impression is the Last Impression”. If the immediate beginning of your resume is not clear and relevant, it keeps the hiring manager wondering where to dig through the CV to find the required information. Therefore, make sure the start of your document is what exactly the employer is looking for. For instance, if applying for a sales job, the title of your resume should clearly mention the relevant keyword like “sales experience”. Similarly, if a particular job looks for a specific certification or qualification, the catch is to highlight that certification in the beginning. Stick to the Point Your style of writing plays a crucial role in revamping your resume. There is no point in choosing a writing style that is flamboyant and too difficult to comprehend. Also, do not try to serve everything in the same platter. Be concise and talk to the point when describing your work experience or previous job role. For instance, instead of saying that “I implemented innovative and best social media techniques to boost the company’s branding”, a direct and more easily measurable style of showing your experience would be to say, “Posted daily Facebook updates and increased the brand’s followers by 150%.” Don’t Force Entire Text to Fit into a Page We have been hearing a lot about maintaining a two-page or even a one-page CV as the length of the CV doesn’t define your knowledge or work experience. On the other hand, fixing the entire text forcefully on a single page by using every possible way such as reducing the font size or leaving little space between two lines is a big blunder. Technically you might be able to achieve this, but you will surely fail to gain the employer’s attention. Imagine, how difficult and unattractive it could be to read a document of 7 or 8 font size, all compressed into a single page. Therefore, the idea is to maintain an ideal length by including only the relevant information and using a right format. Be Thoughtful In the end, everything can fall at a right place if you are able to put yourself in the shoes of the employer. How New Grads Can Find the Right Career Path

How New Grads Can Find the Right Career Path How New Grads Can Find the Right Career Path The job market awaiting new grads is a good one. Low unemployment coupled with millions of job openings means many employers are having a hard time finding skilled talent for open roles. There are a lot of opportunities out there for workers with in-demand skills and experience. Of course, you might not have much of either yet. The reassuring news is that your chances of landing a job look promising. According to a Robert Half survey of employers across the United States, 83 percent of senior managers are likely to hire those who’ve recently earned a college degree. Yes, candidates who have relevant skills and experience typically have an edge in the hiring process. However, employers look for other qualities and attributes, too, like enthusiasm about starting a career and a fresh perspective and ideas. Businesses today are more willing to offer career development programs to promising new hires. Many employers are also snapping up candidates who may be the right fit for their work environment, even if those new hires will need extra ramp-up time. Your involvement in activities on and off campus will be of interest to many employers, as well. Were you the student union president? A member of the orchestra? Did you spend your summers volunteering for a nonprofit or working at the local garden supply store? Don’t be shy about shining a light on activities that you’re proud of and that speak to the type of worker - and person - you are. Now that you have a better idea of the job market for new grads, let’s talk about how to find the right career path for you. Here are three key tips: 1. Be strategic If you’re like most new grads, you’re under pressure - self-imposed or otherwise - to find employment soon after graduation. That can lead you to make hasty (and poor) decisions when applying for jobs or considering job offers. You’ll feel a lot more confident about the whole job search process if you do some homework before you start sending out your resume. Research by our company shows that many factors go into job satisfaction - from company culture to the challenge that work provides. Figure out which factors are most important to you. Then, as you evaluate job openings, determine which opportunities are most likely to provide the factors you value. Be realistic, though. There is no perfect job or company, and holding out for one is a mistake. SEARCH OUR OPEN JOBS 2. Explore different on-ramps to your career Applying for full-time jobs is by no means your only path to the workforce after you graduate. Internships - which aren’t just for students, in many cases - can provide inroads to full-time opportunities. Another route to consider is temporary, freelance and project work. Working on an interim basis can help you to earn new skills and experience (and income to keep up with your student loans) and build your professional network. Through these employment opportunities, you can also determine what type of company you’d like to work for over the long term. 3. Don’t fear the pivot Even with careful thought and planning, you’re likely to make some major changes in direction during your career - especially in the early stages. If you leave college with a degree in one area but end up working in a completely different career track, you won’t be the first. That’s OK. People change. I’ve seen this process unfold time and again with the college students and new grads I mentor, as well as those I meet through my involvement in organizations like Enactus and Beta Alpha Psi. And it’s happened in my own career. I started in public accounting before transitioning to recruitment. I’ve spent more than 30 years with Robert Half, and I could not have imagined this is where life would lead me when I walked off campus for the last time. If your immediate career outlook is a bit murky after graduation, don’t be discouraged. You will likely experience some stops and starts and unexpected turns over the next few years. That’s normal. A smart approach, I believe, is to consistently pursue work you believe will make the best use of your talent - and likely to leave you feeling fulfilled. It might take a while to discover the right career path, but with persistence, patience and flexibility, you no doubt will. Ready to start your career? I took a power nap surrounded by strangers (heres what happened)

I took a power nap surrounded by strangers (here's what happened) I took a power nap surrounded by strangers (here's what happened) Napping is arguably my favorite activity. I say arguably because if it’s between taking a nap and eating chocolate, I’m torn. The decision could really go either way depending on how much sleep I’ve gotten compared to how much chocolate I’ve consumed in the last 24 hours.Anyways, when Ladders got the offer to test out Rise by We’s new open studio power naps, I volunteered as tribute. It was the first time an employer had ever (knowingly) offered to pay me to sleep, and I was excited about my mid-afternoon siesta (I always say, go to Spain for the jamón and the naps). At 2:35 p.m. sharp on a Wednesday, I marched about one block south (or east? I’m bad at directions) to Rise by We’s luxe New York location in the Financial District. I signed in, got my handy dandy ID from a fancy check-in screen, and felt very tech-savvy. Then, I got lost trying to find the escalator. When I finally made it down to Rise by We, which is below street level, I walked into the “wellness clubâ € and felt like Lucy discovering Narnia. “Oasis” doesn’t begin to cut it. Rise by We is a corporate hipster den of beautiful people and exotic colors (when I say exotic, I mean the kinds of colors we see in Central Park, or anywhere with trees). It is the scent of what ambrosia would smell like if it were a real thing. It’s basically like if Hawaii and Michelangelo’s “David” had a baby and named him “Rise” - which, to be fair, would be a way better baby name than “Elsie Otter.”I know what you’re thinking: Nowhere in New York can be that special. Here, we’re all rats that sweat in claustrophobic cages all day and then scurry the streets in hoards. True, all of it. But hear me out. Let me tell you about the mineral pool.In “Wonder Woman,” probably my favorite moment is when a completely naked Chris Pine is bathing in a glittering pool of something way purer than water. When Patty Jenkins directed the scene, she must have based it on this mineral pool on the basement floor of a New York high rise. I have visited waterfalls, and geysers, and hot springs. The mineral pool at Rise by We is the most beautiful water-based monument I have ever seen. There’s a sauna, too. Apparently, people go into this sauna together, in some kind of perfect-person cult ritual, where they sweat and rub essential oils on themselves. It sounds like a way cooler and more Gwyneth Paltrow-friendly version of an orgy. This is why some of us look 40 at 23, and others look 23 at 40.But I digress. I wasn’t at Rise by We for a spa day (though clearly, I would have enjoyed that a lot). I was there for a quick power nap before trudging back to my office in the cold and writing yet another serious piece of journalism much like this one. So let me get to the point: The open studio power nap was the weirdest thing I’ve done in my life. And I’d do it again any day of the week. The spaceI need to come clean: I was homeschooled. That means I never took those Pre-K n aps that everyone seems to pine after as they get older, and if I wanted to sleep, I did so alone in my lovely little bed. I think I went to a total of one sleepover where I had to sleep on the floor. I did not like it.So when I walked into Rise by We’s power nap studio, I was dismayed to find what appeared to be yoga mats on the ground, side by side in rows. This was an especially petrifying sight because my boyfriend recently confessed to me that I snore - and not quietly - so the thought of communal, visible napping made me suddenly self-conscious. But beyond that, I couldn’t imagine that the set-up would be comfortable for someone like me, who has been likened to the princess with that gosh-darn pea.My other two napping colleagues seemed much more in sync with the situation. One of them plopped down, covered himself with a blanket, and got to napping.Which brings me to the goodies: Each station/small strip of floor in what is essentially a yoga studio is equipped with a ma t, eye mask, blanket and zabuton (a rich word for cushion).I studied what my napping partners did and replicated their behavior. I lay down, covered myself with the blanket, and pulled the eye mask out of its bag to cover my face. It smelled like peace on earth. And so I closed my eyes and just breathed. The noisesI should preface this by saying that I do not know if these sounds were intentional or just fortunate happenstance. As everything else fell silent, the studio itself turned into an alien planet of *loud noises.* The sounds were so overwhelming and foreign that they almost lulled my mind to a numbing quiet, like what you’re supposed to achieve when you’re meditating but never do because you’re listing off all the presents you have to buy before Christmas (why did literally all of my cousins procreate?). Were the sounds invasive? Yes. Were they at times annoying? Also yes. Much like those machines that significant others ask you to keep on at night because they “can’ t sleep without background noise,” the sounds - like air going through large pipes, maybe? I don’t know - were not always welcome, but could have been worse. In fact, in a room filled with napping strangers, they almost felt like a necessary evil. I didn’t want anyone to hear me breathing, and I certainly didn’t want to hear them breathe. So a somewhat industrial soundscape was better than the alternative, and soon, I grew fond of the airy orchestrations that I liked to imagine came from a great mind - like Beethoven or Wall-E.The peopleWhich brings me to the other nappers. I never spoke to either of them. There seemed to be an oath of silence between us. We were doing this very strange thing together, and it would only be okay if we never acknowledged it.But what got me was when one of my fellow monks - the other woman- got up and left. It was about 30 minutes into our 50-minute nap session, and presumably, she decided she was now rested (she already looked pretty lumin ous going into me, at least by comparison. I looked like someone who had been recently hit by a truck and lived to tell the tale). Now, all of a sudden, I was in a dimly lit room alone with one other person, who happened to be a man, doing what is likely the most vulnerable physical thing anyone can do.I did not know this man, and I did not trust him. This is a personal prejudice and has nothing to do with said guy, who is presumably a very nice and respectful finance bro. But I have been conditioned to believe that any blonde dude wearing a muscle shirt who looks like he went to The University of Pennsylvania is probably bad news, and those suspicions made me a little uneasy as I tried to return to my happy place. I never quite relaxed.Again, none of this is the man’s fault, who seemed like a decent human just trying to get some zzzzzzzzzzzs. But it is pretty odd to sleep within feet of a complete stranger, and it was made weirder by the fact that the two of us were now alone. The aftermathI never went to sleep. Not fully. But I did get some restful “me” time, and the yoga mat/makeshift “Eat, Pray, Love” movie set was surprisingly comfortable. When it was time to return to the reality of working life on a journalist salary - where Rise by We and its elysian spa is miles out of reach - I felt sleepy and a little grumpy that I couldn’t nap more. But as the hours ticked by, I found that I was more up and energetic than I usually am as day descends into night (that’s not saying much - typically, I want to be in bed by about 8 p.m., and if I’m not asleep by midnight I turn into a gremlin).I also don’t know that my power nap made me more productive. I didn’t really do much of anything afterward, though I did get a craving for penne pasta and hula hooping. Those may be instances of correlation, not causation, but they would require further study to determine anything for sure. All of that said, I would absolutely go nap again. Are you kidding me? I got paid money to sleep. In a utopia. That’s hidden inside a rat trap of a city. Who in their right mind would say no to that?
